Animals evolve through their lifespan through adaptation in order to live and survive. Animals adapt in two ways: physically and behaviorally.
Physical Adaptations are body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend themselves, and to reproduce. Physical adaptations help an animal survive in its environment.
Types of Physical Adaptations
-
camouflage-use of color to blend in with a surrounding
-
mimicry-looking or sounding like another organism
-
chemical defenses- use of chemicals such as venom, in or spray
-
body covering and parts- use of claws, beaks, feet, skulls, teeth
Behavioral Adaptations enable animals to respond to life needs. Each organisms have its own way of adapting to its environment by different actions they take.
Types of Adaptations
-
Instinctive- behaviors that happen naturally and are not learned
-
Learned- behaviors that have to be taught
