Throughout the semester, there serveral assignments and projects assigned that prettied to the material that we went over in class, enhancing our knowledge of cancer. These assignments included, reading and understanding scholarly articles, worksheets, and oral presentations.
The hallmarks of cancer are a set of organized traits that describe how cancer develops and its progression. One of the new emerging hallmarks of is Genomic Instability. For this assignment, we were assinged an article that described many of the hallmarks in great detail. Genomic instability is a characteristic of most cancer. This hallmarks explains how instability within genome results from mutations within DNA repair mechanisms and causes cancer development to thrive cancer development. When cancer cells acquire mutations, these mutations enable the cancer cells to grow faster and continue to divide in large numbers. When these acquired mutations began to accumulate, they increase the risk of malignant tumors to form, resulting in cancer. This hallmark is one of the most important hallmarks because it explains how genome instability results from mutations within the cells, which increase the risk for cancer to develop. Hallmarks Of Cancer
Carcinogenesis
Throughout the course, we learned about the process of carcinogenesis which describes the steps in which cancer and tumors develop. There are several different factors that induce carcinogenesis, which are carcinogens. For this assignment, we were assigned and article in which we had to read and interepet to direct the ways in which the process of carcinogenesis is induced or affected. The assigned article explained how high frequencies of Nitric Oxide production within human adenomas lead to the development of tumors. Nitric oxide is a gas that the body naturally produces and is categorized by three different types, NOS1, NOS2 and NOS3. The form NOS2 is critical to caner development because of its ability to cause mutations within cells. The studies explained in the article showed that mutations occurred more frequently in adenomas when there were higher concentrations of Nitric oxide. There are several experimental test completed on human adenoma tissue that showed large concentrations of NOS2 within blood vessels which allowed there to be a substantial blood supply feeding the tumors allowing them to grow and become malignant, thus inducing carcinogenesis. Along with interpreting our own articles for presentations, we were also assigned articles in the class that oertaitned to different areas of carcinogenesis and the hallmarks of cancer. For this assignment, we were to read, understand, interpret how different factors such as carcinogens, viruses, bacteria, and more aid in the development of cancer. For each article we were to write about our findings and knowledge of the information within each article. This assignment further enhanced our understanding of cancer and how it develops due to the exposure of different carcinogens.

Throughout the course, we learned that the cel cycle and its function plays a role in cancer development. The cell cycle is the process of a series of events in which cells divide and DNA is replicated to make new cells. For this assignment, we were to explore the importance and role of the cell cycle, its phases, as well as research different types of cancers and treatments that can be applied to cancer. This assignment enabled us to take all of the information we learned thrgouhout the semester and apply it to real life situations to determine not only what is going on with the patient, but also determine the state of the patients health based in the progression of their cancer as well as decided on a method of treatment. This assignment was my favorite because all though the other assignments given class further explained how cancer work, this assignment enabled me to take what I know about how cancer develops to real life situations, that I may have a personal connection with or know someone who has dealt with. This assignment allowed me to test my knowledge of how cancer progresses. To learn more about the case study, download the document below.
